Number of items purchased for the Katrina victims: 33
Number of items that made it from the car to holding center: 32
Item left in the car: an 80 count box of sanitary napkins
Not to make the guys squirm, but I don't use sanitary napkins. What am I going to do with them?! Husband said "donate them to the food shelf!" (Catch the funny? ;)
So, the story: We both took the afternoon off. We got lunch, ate it. I went to my second doctor's appointment, asked the doctor if he or any of his colleagues are volunteering for Hurricane Relief. He said he can't go because he has another commitment for the next 4-6 months out of the country (Africa), but the others were looking at their schedule to see how to "make it happen". Good doctor!
I came home from the doctor's appointment, we rushed to Wal-mart. Was that really rushing? So much traffic! Wal-mart happens to be very close the the state police barracks, so there was a really horrible traffic mess. We finally got to Wal-mart, tried to get a bit of everything, ended up getting water, cat food, mouth wash, shampoo, shampoo/conditioner, Pringles, cracker snacks, oatmeal, corn flakes, sanitary napkins ( :( ), tampons, bar soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, peanut butter/jelly combo, liquid hand soap, and Snapple.
We had less than an eighth of a tank of gas and there was no way in hell we were getting to the barracks before running out of gas so we gunned it onto the interstate, drove down an exit, got gas, and decided to go to a different drop-off point. We arrived at the other drop-off point right before rush hour, got in and out in 10 minutes or less, drove home then realized the panty liners were still in the car. Oh well. There are donation hours tomorrow as well, so I'm considering driving up again and taking the liners plus some canned goods and some "like new" clothing. We'll see.
We're still going to give money to the Red Cross if we can ever get onto their website.

I went with Second Harvest which is part of the food bank networks. They sent me an email since I have a regular donation set up with them.
