They're so pretty! I think I'm going to have to find a place for some in my yard.

just asking, isn't opium made from poppy? aren't they banned in your country, with all the war against drugs i hear about?

Opium is made from poppy seeds, as far as I know. I don't think we individually grow enough poppies to make opium, though. I've never heard of opium being grown in the US, but I don't pay attention to drug statistics. When I was an RA in college our campus police force showed us several drugs that students would commonly bring to campus so that we knew when someone had something illegal in their possession. I don't remember being shown opium... Definitely mushrooms, LSD, and marijuana. I think even cocaine, but no opium.

Poppies are definitely not illegal here, they come in wildflower mixes, they even come as a freebie gift in my gardening mailers, and are sold in all varieties at any gardening supply storefront or Internet store.

Contrary to popular belief, not all of America is quite so infested with drugs. There are many people here who deal and buy/use, but I don't know any of those people. :)
