Reward

Reward for information that allows authorities to locate LaToyia Figueroa: $10,000.

Reward for information that allowed authorities to locate Laci Peterson: $500,000 but later downgraded to $50,000.

Reward for information that allows authorities to locate Natalee Holloway: $1,000,000.

Draw your own conclusions. Constructive comments only, please. Someone knows where LaToyia is. I hope they're not holding out for a bigger reward.

You know, I wrote out a comment on this very same issue to your other post about her, but I decided not to publish. I was struggling to find an appropriate way to convey that, while I feel horribly for her family and wish for her safe return, I am glad that the news is at least covering it. But yeah, apparently they're not covering it with the same zeal as Jennifer "Saucer Eyes" Whatever her last name is, Laci or Natalee. And that's just sad. See? I'm still struggling with how to articulate it properly. White people are not the most newsworthy. I think it is time to cover everyone equally and with the same compassion.

Who puts up the rewards for missing people?

Jurgen - I had the same reaction to Poppy's initial post. I didn't know how to put it into words.

Joanne, I read that it's the families.

Here's more info, from a letter written to CNN (see http://bridgetunnel.blogspot.com):

While it's doubtful that Latoyia's family can offer $100 reward, much less $1 million (as has Natalee's), I'm sure they'd still have an undying gratitude for any of your viewers who could turn up a lead on Latoyia.Oh, and here's a picture of Latoyia, in case you need one when you run your full hour show devoted to Latoyia. I'm sure her family can provide more.

Well, I hope they find her quickly. And I have seen a lot of blogs covering her disappearance, which is encouraging.

It's sick. The bottom line is that there is a WOMAN missing, who is someone's daughter, friend, significant other, mother...so many things to so many people. The way with which we pursue the "newsworthy" stories is appalling and clearly biased. It doesn't matter what income bracket she is in or what race she's a part of. Ultimately, we're all part of the same one anyway. The only way to make a change (ahem, like the Karl Rove sitch as well) is to vociferously pursue this by writing and calling the people who make these decisions, but I can't help but want to stamp my foot in frustration because we shouldn't HAVE TO.
