Remember when Oprah defended James Frey?

Tis now but a memory.

Oprah is pissed that James Frey lied to America and embarrassed her on live television. (Gawker)

I still stick with my guns that Million and Leonard are great books, but my high regard for Frey's character has diminished. Not because of Oprah, but because he's still not being honest. Get your mind out of the shady side, James.

I've been all over the map on this one. I agree with you; they're great books, but he lied. There's no getting 'round that. I don't respect that.

I'm sorry, but this is breaking my heart... I actually heard one of the journalists that appeared on Oprah today say that he had no experience with addiction? What world does he live in? I agree that James is experiencing some issues here, but as a an adult that grew up with a father who was a severe alcoholic/addict It seems to me that whether he likes it or not this controversy is a part of his "process". I stand behind James and will continue to buy his books!

The books are still great. And, I'd prefer not to say how much my experience compares to your own, and also to Frey's. However, these are not justifications for lying to the public (and continuing to do so) just to see your books do better. It sounds greedy, like he told a small fib and it snowballed, and I don't appreciate that he isn't fessing up completely to what is verifiably untrue. That doesn't mean I won't read more books that he publishes, because I can respect a great work of art even if I don't fully respect the person who created it. It just means that I don't appreciate his behavior at the moment, and I wish he'd learn in his recovery process that honesty is part of recovery. Shadiness leads back into darkness.
