crispy tofu

I love Asian-inspired tofu meals, but I prefer the tofu to be crispy on the outside. My favorite place to get this (to me) delicacy closed down when the owners were murdered by a rival restaurant owner. Very sad... Anyone have tips for crunchy tofu? I'm making it tonight, but if you answer a different day I'll use the knowledge another time.

Also, what's your favorite sauce recipe for tofu?

I don't have a favorite sauce recipe, but I do have a recipe for something called Temple Tofu Salad, which is really good. Tried it at one of my temp assignments and got the recipe from the person who made it.

Temple Tofu:

2 lb. Extra firm tofu, drained, cubed small
1/6 lb dried mango,sliced thin
1 cup roasted cashews
3/4 cup (more or less to taste) large flake coconut
1/2 stalk finely diced celery
1 bunch chopped green onion
1/3 diced red onion
2/3 red bell pepper, diced small

Dressing:
1 1/3 cups Vegenaise
2/3 cup mango chutney
1-2 Tbsp mild curry paste

Make dressing first then add tofu to marinate.
Cut up remaining ingredients then add. Refrigerate.

* I've reduced the recipe by three, so you can vary the amount of ingredients according to taste. I find it difficult to cut dried mango slices, so usually i don't add them. I recommend adding 1 Tbsp of curry paste at a time, then tasting. The curry paste is really strong and you don't want it to be overbearing.

All of the ingredients are available at Trader Joes.

Nobody likes tofu - it's how you spice it up that makes it so awesome. Tonight I tried something different - 6 T flour to 3 t corn starch, a few dashes of garlic powder, then shook it all in a bag, then put the diced tofu in the bag and fried it in peanut oil with a few drops of sesame oil until golden brown. I used a kung pao mix to drown the tofu in, topped over rice. NUMMY. I was dangerously close to eating an entire pound of tofu...

Correction: It was only 1/2 a pound. FEW, that means I get to have dessert. :) Also a correction: I didn't fry the tofu while still in the bag, I fried it after coating it with the contents of the bag.

Thanks to Zesty for the new tofu idea.

I consumed the rest of my crunchy/crispy kung pao tofu this evening. It was incredible. Mmmmm....
