US adopts the English language

I'm walking out the door to my next appointment, but I need to share this: The US Senate has just voted to make English the national language. How do you feel about that? I think it's a bit short-sighted. If we're going to adopt languages, we should consider going bilingual.

We should have put it to a vote. Whatever happened to power of the people?

I do think English should be our national language.

But I also agree with Bryan - why not put it to a vote.

Dude. When did Americans stop respecting Pig Latin as a language? It should totally be our second official language.

Or, I should say, anguage-lay.

We can't really put it to a vote... the U.S. accepted citizens into its territories years ago without regard to the language they spoke. It was part of the deal... Arizona, Louisiana and TEXAS are all officially bilingual. Until 1950 Pennsylvania was bilingual (German). How do you tell people in Arizona who have legally been speaking spanish since 1500 that they have to stop? That is insane. And why? Because are Americans are too freaking lazy to learn ANY other language? And bryan.. the U.S. Constitution was meant to protect the few from the tyranny of the masses..

I don't understand why having a common language so we can communicate with each other is a problem.

I speak another language, but when speaking or writing to the larger community, it's handy that others can understand me.

eh... i think a common language is a good idea. cuts down on confusion. everyone is on the same page, blah, blah, blah. however, i doubt i'd impale myself on a toothpick if English was not the "official" language.

why are Americans lazy who don't learn another language, but immigrants who won't learn english aren't? and what about german immigrants, chinese, japenese, etc. what are they? chopped liver? is it lazy when we don't learn every language in the world? i'd prefer the response to be in russian, thanks. hehe

oh. and i am lazy. as you can see from my punctuation. :D

I think that if we're going to declare an "official language" English should be it. You need a basic grasp of english to function in daily life. I can't imagine being a doctor and not being able to communicate with the patient--there are plenty of other situations that are the same, but I don't have all day to describe them. :) If we want to be united, a common language would be a good idea. That's not to say that other languages aren't important. But our government and most of the business world functions in English.
