808

Why is everyone singing about 808 now? Please help me to understand. I've read the Hip Hop slang dictionary, the urban dictionary, and wikipedia but I still don't get it. Why is everyone exclaiming it in their songs?! (Beyoncé and Kelis both have new songs in which they reference “808”.)

Ummm... there was an 808 synthesizer in the 80s that could produce some drum sounds and beats. Some rappers have used it in their sequencing.

It's also an area code in Hawaii.

Yup, Hawaii. Yup, synthesizer. (Both are credited to the Hip Hop reason for exclaiming 808.)

But, it still begs the q: Why???

It just doesn't seem like something cool to exclaim once you know what it is... Like, randomly exclaiming “Seabiscuit!”. See? Not cool.

Son of a Seabiscuit!! Why do rappers always need codes? Do they think they're cool or something? We'd all get along better if we just spoke plain ol' english and stopped trying to jazz it up.

Correct. The 808 Kickdrum was drum machine used 'back in the day' to make drum tracks. It was the first commercial drum machine that made "bass" sounds. Probably 90% of all the rap songs from the 80's and early 90's use a canned drum track from that machine. It's still funny to hear one now and again and say,"yep that's that 808, dropin' bombs" Cause that's how I talk. I got mad street skillz.
