Perhaps this truly is common knowledge, but it's hard for me to know when something is a random fact that I know versus something that's like tying shoes (everyone over age 5 knows about it). So, here goes:

I did know that , but the vast majority of people are toe picking morons,so..... I am glad you are mentioning it now.
when they are working you can't pet them - but if their person gives them a break you can ask and usually you can pet them.
